Q: What are Energy Service Companies?

Energy Service Companies (ESCOs) are corporations (both large and small) that compete to sell you electricity and gas. The must be registered with the Public Service Commission (PSC), and act solely as the energy supplier – Con Edison remains the energy delivery company.

Different ESCOs may offer different energy service options, incentives and services designed to fit your needs. It is important to shop around for the choice that best suits your lifestyle.

Q: How do I enroll?

Contact the Energy Service Company directly. You will need to provide them with your Con Edison account number so that they can obtain your usage and complete your enrollment in the program.

Q: How long does it take for my new service to kick in?

In the case of electric service, your ESCO supplier will begin serving you on your next meter reading date (so long as you enroll 15 days prior). Gas service customers will begin receiving service on the first calendar day of the following month, provided they enroll by the 15th of the month.

Q: Will I receive the same level of service from Con Edison if I elect to receive my energy from an ESCO?
A: Absolutely. Con Edison will remain your energy delivery company. We will continue to offer you reliable, safe and effective service, and respond to all emergencies.

Q: How will I be billed?
A: There are multiple billing options available:
  • TWO BILLS: one from the ESCO reflecting energy supply charges and the other from Con Edison reflecting energy delivery charges
  • ONE BILL: The ESCO may bill on behalf of Con Edison, including utility delivery charges in a combined bill
  • Other options may be available. Be sure to inquire when you enroll.

Regardless of which billing option you choose, you will always have access to your utility billing usage and billing history, and Con Edison will only release that information with your permission.

Q: If I switch to an ESCO, can I decide later to switch to a different ESCO? Can I decide to switch back to Con Edison?

If you are unhappy with your supplier you can switch back to Con Edison or enroll with a different supplier, but when making the switch it is important to consider the terms and conditions of the ESCO you choose to enroll with.

In the case of natural gas, If you choose to switch back to Con Edison, you must then remain with Con Edison for one year before switching to an ESCO.

Q: How do I register complaints or service issues if I am enrolled in an ESCO?

Because the delivery portion of your bill is regulated by the Public Service Commission, you should contact them with any complaints or service delivery issues. The commission may not resolve your complaint but it is important to register your dissatisfaction, as they track complaints and may take action against companies with high complaint levels.

The Public Service Commission requires all ESCOs to offer convenient complaint handling procedures and provide clear information on switching.
