Solar Energy — What You Need To Know

Is Solar For Me?

Before considering solar energy, it's important that you have a solid grasp of your current energy use, and that your home or business is as energy efficient as possible. You can view your usage history online by logging in to your account. Arming yourself with this information will allow you to get the most for your money.

First Steps

  • Understand Your Usage. Review your home energy bills from the past 12 months. Knowing how much energy you use (in kilowatt-hours), will help your contractor build a solar system tailored to your needs.
  • Increase Energy Efficiency. Make your home as energy efficient as possible. Get tips, information about incentives, and advice on how you can conserve energy.

What Does It Cost?

The cost of solar energy varies depending on your energy use. Contractors offer different ways to finance a solar system, and depending on your current financial situation, your tax or financial advisor can help you decide whether it's better for you to purchase or lease your system. How Do I Get Started?

Installing a rooftop solar system is a team effort. Con Edison is part of that team. We make sure your solar installation is properly connected to the grid, and that it operates safely and efficiently so you'll have power when the sun goes down. The actual installation of solar panels is done by independent contractors. Although we cannot make recommendations on specific contractors, we can provide you with resources that will help you make an educated decision.

Now What?

Once you've found a contractor, they will submit your application to Con Edison, and we will review it to make sure everything is properly documented. Upon verification of your application, you will receive an email from our Project Center. When your installation is complete, we will give you a new net meter. For residential solar, your installer will also run tests to ensure that your system is working safely and properly. Con Edison will conduct an inspection on all solar projects over 25kW. Once your net meter is installed and we've assured that your system is safe, we'll send you a letter alerting you that your contractor can turn on your solar system and you can start producing energy.

How Will My Bill Differ?

The net meter will record the difference between the energy produced and the energy consumed. If you were previously enrolled in either the voluntary time-of-use program or a level billing payment plan, we recommend that you opt out, as these are generally not beneficial for our solar customers. Unless you produce more energy than you need, your Con Edison bill will look exactly the same. If you do produce an excess of energy, your bill will contain a summary page detailing the credits allotted to your solar bank. These credits roll over to your next monthly bill. Please note:
A monthly service charge always applies regardless of the amount of credits incurred.
The amount of credits depends on season, daylight hours and your usage patterns.

When Should I Cash Out My Solar Credits?

Once a year, Con Edison is required to "cash out" your solar bank. This cash out is regulated by law and is done at a lower rate than the one that appears on your bill. You can decide which month you'd like to cash out, but because your solar bank has more value when applied to your energy use, many choose to cash out during months where they expect the fewest amount of credits in their solar bank. To figure out what makes the most economic sense for your particular situation, it may be worthwhile to wait a year to monitor your energy use.

What Do I Need to Know?

Before planning any interconnection process in our service area, it is important that you understand Con Edison's electric grid. In order to ensure system reliability and safety, each project must submit detailed specifications for review. In some cases, your project may need upgrades in order to interconnect. Whether or not your project will require upgrades is site specific and depends on both the size of the solar energy system relative to load, as well as the type of service to the building. Grid connections generally fall under one of the following three categories:

  • Radial Service: Easiest for export, but may require upgrades based on existing PV penetration, size of PV compared to service or transformers and any switch or re-closer issues.
  • Network Grid Service: Indicated service from a manhole or service box connection. Ability to export is dependent on PV size in relation to service capacity/local network minimum loads. Upgrades may require street work which can add additional costs and time to a project.
  • Isolated/Spot Network Service: Generally only applies to larger load buildings and will require upgrades to allow export. If your project involves isolated or spot network service and you would like more information, please contact us at

Costs for upgrades are site specific and estimates are based on specific project proposals. Additional costs may incur as a result of any work done outside general working hours, Monday–Friday, 7 a.m.–3 p.m.

How Do I Submit an Application?

Before submitting any application, please review the New York State Standardized Interconnection Requirements (SIR).

All applications can be submitted online via Con Edison's Project Center and should include the following documents (as specified by the SIR):

  • Customer authorization letter
  • Appendix A
  • Appendix B
  • Technical drawings and equipment specifications
  • Inverter test procedure (only applies to systems under 25kW)
  • Net metering/community net metering forms (where applicable)

Please include all necessary information, designs and accurate contact information to ensure an efficient review process. Any missing information or changes to a project design may result in additional review time.

Please note:
Once construction is complete, you need to notify Con Edison to request a net meter and schedule an inspection.
If your project requires upgrades, payment must be received before commencement of work.

Who Can I Contact with Additional Questions or Concerns?

Your customer project manager will be your main point of contact. You will be notified of their information upon submission of your application.

The following departments are also involved and may be used as resources throughout the installation process:

Distribution Engineering: Performs all technical analysis for interconnection.
Distributed Generation: Provides guidance on rules, tariffs and general information and can connect you to the appropriate parties should problems arise.
Customer Care Group: Handles all net metering billing. This is your customers' point of contact after their system is installed.
