Mott Haven Substation Wins PCI Design Award
Mott HavenIn May 2007, Con Edison completed the remarkable feat of energizing two substations (an area substation and a transmission station) that were constructed under one roof with a common control room. The station also boasts a creative facade that resembles a row of handsome buildings. Mott Haven’s innovative and elegant design makes extensive use of precast concrete, and earned the station a 2008 design award from the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI).

The PCI Design Awards are given to best-in-class buildings, bridges, and special structures that stand out in their utilization of precast concrete as a major construction element. A panel of qualified, impartial judges drawn from fields of architecture and engineering considered award entrants on criteria including creativity, ingenuity, the use of precast concrete to successfully achieve aesthetic expression, function, economy, and sustainability, and excellence in design, engineering, manufacturing, and erecting.

Previously, in January 2008, the Mott Haven station garnered Utility Automation and Engineering T&D magazine’s "Project of the Year" award, presented at the DistribuTECH Conference in Tampa, Florida.

Con Edison Leads DiversityInc. Magazine’s Top Utility Companies
Con Edison’s commitment to diversity in the workplace was recognized as the company topped the list in DiversityInc magazine’s new ranking, “Top Utility Companies” for diversity. Con Edison has been a perennial high-performer in the magazine’s annual “Top 50 Companies for Diversity” rankings.

In 2007, Con Edison ranked number eight in DiversityInc’s national “Top 50 Companies for Diversity” list. Con Edison also ranked number four on the publication’s “Top 10 Companies for Executive Women,” number five on the “Top 10 Companies for Supplier Diversity,” number two on the “Top 10 Companies for Recruitment & Retention,” and number one the “Top 10 for Latinos.”

All the companies on the list dedicate substantial resources to their diversity supplier programs, providing small business vendors effective communication channels with the corporation as well as tools and resources to improve the supplier-customer relationship. The listed corporations are selected by evaluating company data as well as information provided by current and prospective small business suppliers.
